RPGaDay 2020 – Experience

31/08/2020
Retrospective

And so we come to the end of another RPG a Day. It’s reassuring to know that no matter how weird the rest of 2020 has been, some things remained the same. This is also the second year of the new single word prompt format.

For today’s final entry I’m going to talk about my Experience with RPG a Day 2020.

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, “It might have been.”
— Kurt Vonnegut

It feels like every year I approach RPG a Day with lofty plans. I’ll write posts days in advance, scheduling them to post at the right time and moving on. As usual, this all falls apart in the first day or two. I can’t even blame it on the current global situation. Life gets busy.

Most of these posts where written in the evening, hours or minutes before they were due to post. Because of this, some of the posts were a little more vague or less coherent than I’d prefer. A hastily typed response barely covering the day’s prompt. At least that’s how it feels.

Do I feel like my efforts were wasted? Absolutely not. Much like other X a Day events, the main goal is to take part in some way. All up, I’ve written close to 10,000 words this month. For someone doing a little each night, that’s not too shabby. Not quite NANOWRIMO, but that’s fine.

But what about my intention of using these posts to flesh out my idea for a space opera RPG – Between the Stars? It might not seem like it, but this has helped. I’m not sure when work will begin on that in earnest, but I would like to have made a start before RPG a Day 2021. That way I can answer those prompts in a more interesting way. At least, that’s what I’d like to do.

And with that I’ll wrap things up. It’s been a fun month. Perplexing at times, but still enjoyable. If you’re reading this and realised you’ve missed out, don’t fret. Start answering the prompts yourself right now. It doesn’t even have to be one a day.
