RPGaDay 2017 – Day 12

Which RPG has the most inspiring interior art?

Short Answer: Hollow Earth Expedition’s pencil sketches.

Long Answer: RPG art quality has come a long way in the last few decades, from sometimes ropey line art to full-page watercolour pieces. However, determining the most inspiring isn’t as simple as picking the best quality pieces. A lot of it comes down to the associated game. Pieces depicting scenes of action might look out-of-place in a game focussed on investigation or political manoeuvring.

For me, the art that best captures the feel of its game comes from the Hollow Earth Expedition series. Much of the artwork, created by Jeff Slemons, took the style of simple pencil sketches created in situ. This gives the art an authentic, setting appropriate appearance. It also provides examples of encounters within the Earth and potential story seeds for future adventures.
