RPGaDay 2017 – Day 2

What is an RPG you would like to see published?

Short Answer: A non-franchise, action adventure sci-fi setting.

Long Answer: The easy answer is to name a franchise that has never been adapted into a roleplaying game. I could name three or four, but I won’t. Franchise RPGs are fun if done right, but can quickly become constrained by established canon and derailed by excessive inappropriate quoting of the source material.

Instead, take a genre we know and love and try something new – or as new as you can get after decades of similar books, TV shows, and movies. For me that would be good ol’ space opera. A fine balance of science and fiction. Hard science can make for a great setting, like The Expanse, but might slow down the game at times. Conversely settings that are little more than fantasy in space, like Starfinder and Spelljammer, are a bit too whimsical for my tastes.

Fortunately, there is plenty of middle ground to hold a game with enough variety and depth to have broad appeal. Sure, it would suffer when going up against RPGs with a bit of history to them, but not everyone wants to set phasers to stun or make the calculations for the jump to hyperspace.

It might seem like a long shot, but that’s something I’d love to see published.
