RPGaDay – Day 22: Perfect Gaming Environment
Short Answer: Around a table, controllable temperature, access to food and break-out rooms for secret talk.
Long Answer: This one is pretty self-explanatory, really. The less you need to worry about your surroundings, the more you can focus on what really matters. In this case, that’s gaming.
It depends on the game, but most of the time it’s better if everyone is sitting around a table. Not too small, but not too big either. Everyone needs enough room for their character sheet and anything else they need.
Temperature is more of a personal consideration. Too cold and it’s distracting, too warm and I find myself getting sleepy (especially if there’s a lot of down time).
Access to food is optional, but can help with longer gaming sessions. Make sure everyone is okay first if you want to eat at the table during the game, and if they are limit yourself to less messy foods. Opt for candy over Doritos. Better yet, try something healthy like celery stalks or apple wedges.
Break-out rooms are also optional and game-dependent, but can really add a level of secrecy to session. A room isn’t necessary, just somewhere separated from the main gaming area that people can talk without being heard. If the weather’s good, go outside.
