RPGaDay 2015 – Day 3: Favourite New Game of the last 12 months
Short Answer: Achtung! Cthulhu, Modiphius.
Long Answer: While I backed Achtung! Cthulhu on Kickstarter well over 12 months ago, it only arrived at the start of this year, so I’m saying that counts.
While it’s true that the Call of Cthulhu RPG is FAR from a new game, Modiphius takes the mythos and turns things up to eleven. On top of this, they don’t just focus on the major powers of the conflict. There are character options to let you play agents from all countries involved, and many of the military branches involved in the conflict.
This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s a common issue with games set during WW2. After 15 years of books and models for the European and North African theatres, Flames of War has yet to expand into the Pacific. Yes, it’s easier for an RPG to cover all areas of the conflict, but there is a tendency to stick to the things people know best. Also, German tanks look better than Japanese ones.
The beauty of this game is it lets you take something we all know so well and turn it completely on its head. Members of the Māori Battalion teamed up with French Resistance agents and US Paratroopers taking on ancient terrors on an atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? An average day in the life of an investigator in Achtung! Cthulhu.
