RPGaDay – Day 1: First RPG Played
Short Answer: Call of Cthulhu, aged 13.
Long Answer: Yeah, I popped my roleplaying cherry in possibly the most mind-warping way possible – with elder horrors, monstrous foes, and characters from the 1920s. At least, I would have had any of us had the faintest idea what we were doing. Instead of investigating the mystery and advancing the plot, we spent our time trying to flirt with the female NPCs.
As you can imagine, things did not end well for out investigators. I don’t remember exactly what happened, but eventually the Keeper had enough and told us the woman we were chatting to turned into a monster and killed us all. We decided to put away the game after that.
The most amazing thing about all of this is that Call of Cthulhu was my first experience with H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. This was a time when Cthulhu wasn’t a pop culture icon, but something limited to roleplayers and lovers of horror. Little did I realise then the impact the stories that inspired my first roleplaying game would be such a large part of my adult life.
